DSAT - Gas Blender (Nitrox)

Why become a DSAT Gas Blender for Nitrox ?
It's a way to get the necessary knowledge to safely mix enriched air or to learn about the various hardware options available and the pros and cons of each. DSAT has just released a Gas Blender course, and even if you are not certain yet that you want to invest in an enriched air blending system it will pay you to attend this course. The knowledge you will gain will help you to make an informed choice as to whether this is logical direction for your business, and, if so, what your requirements would be.
The course takes you step-by-step through the essential information needed to mix diving gases

The course takes you step-by-step through the essential information needed to mix Nitrox in a safe and accurate way. The course also includes an overview of helium mixes such as trimix. Concepts are introduced in an easy-to-follow manual and illustrated with instructor lesson guides. The importance of handling oxygen correctly is dealt with extensively, including why high-pressure oxygen can cause fires or explosion if handled improperly. You are shown what types of materials are compatible with oxygen and why some kinds of 'standard' materials must be avoided (eg silicone grease).

The type of oxygen you can use, the quality of air needed to mix with it, and the various mixing systems are all covered, including partial pressure mixing, continuous flow, pressure swing absorption and differential permeability. These represent some of the practical options you might use for filling a cylinder, from the simplest case where you just add some oxygen and top up with air, to a sophisticated, high-output system.

Best of all, you do not need to use a lot of complicated formulas to work out the amount of gases to add to make a mix. That's where the Gas Mix Calculator (software) comes in... Three coloured sliders allow you to enter what amounts of oxygen, nitrogen and (if applicable) helium are already in the cylinder to be filled, and three more sliders allow you to dial in what you want. The programme instantly tells you how much oxygen, nitrogen or helium you must add to get the target mix.

The course is made up of a mixture of theory and practical hands on training, using our own compressor and the partial pressure blending method. If you have your an oxygen clean tank you will be able to fill and take away your own nitrox mix.

Upon successfully completing the DSAT Gas blender course, you will be able to:

  • Blend enriched air blends within one percent of the target mix as measured by oxygen content, following accepted safety protocols and standards.
  • List the advantages and disadvantages of different blending methodologies.
  • Explain the potential hazards related to handling oxygen and how to manage these hazards.
  • Explain and/or demonstrate the steps for oxygen cleaning equipment such as cylinders, regulators, partial pressure blending systems, etc.
  • Describe the requirements for oxygen service.

The DSAT Gas Blender course not only increases your professional qualifications, it also covers a fascinating subject in an easy-to-follow, uncomplicated way.
